Text Giving Campaign Launched on Anniversary of PC Palmer’s Murder
ON THE first anniversary of the murder of PC Keith Palmer (22nd March) at the gates of the Houses of Parliament, the UK Police Arboretum Memorial Trust is launching a text giving fundraising campaign to support the building of a new memorial to honour fallen police officers.
Members of the public are being encouraged to make a £5 donation to the memorial by texting the word ‘courage’ to 70171.
PC Palmer’s name will be one of 1,400 inscribed on the new memorial to be built at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.
Commenting on the text giving campaign Sir Hugh Orde, Chair of Trustees, said: “This has been an unprecedented year for policing with officers and staff repeatedly putting themselves in danger to keep the public safe and protecting them from harm. Sadly, in March last year we saw one of my policing colleague’s PC Keith Palmer lose his life during a terrorist attack in London whilst protecting our freedoms and safeguarding our democracy.
“Keith’s death put greater emphasis on the need to create a memorial where the nation can go to commemorate our police service and where family, friends and colleagues of those killed on duty can carry out personal acts of remembrance in a tranquil and peaceful environment.
“Text giving affords the public the opportunity to make a personal gift to honour our policing heroes. By texting ‘Courage’ to 70171 you can play your part in helping us to establish a fitting tribute to commemorate the brave men and women from our police service who have given so much.”
Text messages will be charged at £5, plus one message at your standard message rate.
