Sir Hugh Steps Down as Chair of Trustees

After seven years leading the Police Arboretum Memorial Trust, Sir Hugh Orde, has made the decision to step down as Chair of Trustees.

Sir Hugh said: “I have had the privilege of leading this project for a number of years, before we had even established the Police Arboretum Memorial Trust, when it was just a vision. During that time, I have worked with many amazing people, fellow Trustees, members of the policing family, our supporters and donors, who have helped us get this project across the line. I cannot thank them enough for their support to the Trust and to me personally.

“Now that Phase I of this project is complete it is now right for me to over hand the baton to a new chair of Trustees and I am delighted that Martin Hewitt, Chair of the National Police Chiefs’ Council, has kindly agreed to undertake this role.”

New Chair, Martin Hewitt, said: “Sir Hugh’s leadership of this project has been amazing. What started as a vision was only made possible by his guidance, encouragement and direction. On behalf of the Trust, I wish to pay tribute to him and thank him for everything he has achieved.

“Sir Hugh should feel extremely proud that the Service now has a lasting legacy at the Arboretum that commemorates all those from UK policing who have paid that ultimate price.”

The good news is that Sir Hugh is not going to disappear, and the Trustees unanimously decided to appoint him as Patron of the Trust.
